Cockapoos’ Diet and Exercise

Cockapoos’ Diet & Exercise Advice

A big part of dog ownership is keeping your furry friend fit and healthy. To do so, you need to ensure you’re giving them a well-balanced diet of nutritional food, and exercising them as regularly as they need. Diet and exercise needs can vary hugely from breed to breed, and so getting to know the specific requirements for your cockapoo is important.

Below we’ve answered some common questions on cockapoo’s exercise and dietary requirements so you know what to expect.

How often should I feed my cockapoo?

How regularly owners feed their dogs can be a personal preference, with some opting for just once a day and others leaving food down for them to graze on all day. However most experts recommend that splitting the recommended food allowance over two meals is best for dogs’ digestion.

It’s also recommended that you stick to scheduled feeding times for your cockapoo, rather than leaving food down for hours at a time. A loss of appetite can often be a sign of illness, and this can be harder to spot if your dog picks at food over the day.

Therefore, it’s recommended to feed your cockapoo twice daily, with one morning and one evening meal. Scheduling these around your family meal times can be a good way to distract your dog away from the table, and discourage any begging behaviours.

How much food do cockapoos need?

Like all dog breeds, the amount you feed your cockapoo might vary depending on their size and energy levels. Assuming yours is an average-sized medium cockapoo, the right amount will likely be around 1-1 ¾ cups of food a day.

How much exercise do cockapoos need?

Like both of their parent breeds, cockapoos are highly energetic, active dogs that need regular exercise. They’re most suited to fairly active homes where they can receive an hour of exercise per day. This can either be split into two 30 minute walks, or one longer walk.

Exercise is not only essential for your cockapoo’s health. Dogs who don’t get to run around enough can end up with pent up energy, which may lead to disruptive behaviours. As some experts say,  ‘a tired dog is a happy dog’! Therefore, exercising your cockapoo should be a priority each day.
